I’m currently running a PC with Windows Me and office 2000 loaded on it. Yesterday when I opened a word file the title bar flashed and in the lower left had corner it said Request virus scan.

I was wondering if anyone had seen this before and knows what it means.

I ran a virus scan on my computer and there were no viruses found, although I had a virus I quarantined last week.

Do you have NAV installed? It probably said "Requesting" virus scan... . Norton sets itself up to scan all documents when they are opened. When starting Word, it loads a blank document, and it (and normal.dot) get scanned. It is a normal thing.

Thanks for your insight, but I think it might be something different. I do run Norton Antivirus software. Any other suggestions?

Nope, they hit it right on the head.. I also run Office 2000 and Office XP along woth Norton 2002.. Get the request all the time.

WindowWizard is correct...
...an easy way to prove it out is to disable you Norton, then repeat the action and see if it persists.
If you wish to disable this, you'll need to go into Norton and disable the Office plug-in.

(This is for Microsoft Project, but pertains to Word, Excel, etc. as well...)

Thanks for the replies.

I’ll test the theory by disable Norton when I get back home.
