Report with Columns and Grouping 1

When I run a report that has 2 columns in the layout, and a single grouping, if the print is set to go from side-to-side, it leaves the first left-hand "block" empty, yet if I remove the grouping, or change the print to up-and-down, it prints in the block.

eg. I want

a b
c d
e f

but I get

a
b c
d e
f

Can anybody tell me how to get around this issue without having to remove my grouping or set the printing to up-and-down?
Thanks!

HI

Are the fields from the same records ? or they belong to 2 consecutive records.

It is likely you have the problem in your code when you skip the record from first to next.

As long as you have setup the data and records in your table/cursor prior to doing the report such that you have:

Record # Field1 Field2
1st in Group a b
2nd in Group c d
3rd in Group e f

You should get what you want.

That is because when a VFP report is set to left-right orientation with columns, the first "block" as you called it is actually reserved for the group header. A workaround is to put the exact same field in the group header and have and function On Exit from that band that advances the record source with skip 1. It's an ugly hack but works.

Thanks everybody for your contributions. Craigsboyd was spot on with identifying that the area is reserved for the group header in this specific scenario - that goes a long way towards helping me out. Thank you!

gothbabe55,

Glad I could help and thanks for the star. There's actually a FAQ on the approach I outlined that was written awhile back by BPeisch:

When printing a multi-column report that has a "Group BY" and prints horizontally, how do I get the detail to print in the first cell?
