I have a Database ( FE / BE split ) where the Back End is replicated.

I'm experiencing problems with the replica that is on a server at a remote site. We communicate with the remote site over a relativly slow link - hence the need for the replica.

One of the admin staff runs a Synchronisation at the end of each day and this normally goes well.
HOWEVER, sometimes ( about once a week ) the synchronisation fails.

On investigation we find that the database at the remote site is no longer a replica database - It works fine as a standalone database but denies any knowledge of belonging to the replica set.

My question - Is there any known way that an individual at the remote site could be ( deliberately or accidentally ) changing the state of the database.

Or is this a symptom of a file corruption event that may indicate a hardware fault

Or have you any other ideas.

As I understand it, once a replica always a replica. However you can open Access and recover the "Master" from a replica.

I have seen replications that fail and then the "master" shows as a replica, but will not replicate or let you create another replica set. Something goes awry in the transaction ids.

Good luck, I understand 2002 is supposed to be much more stable. Let hope.

Yes CSummers - we have come to the conclusion that the root cause of the problem is the router at the remote office. When something goes wrong with that the Sync gets currupted and the 'Replica' status of the database gets wrecked.

Still have found no fix for it though.

We're having to take a copy of the replica before attempting to Sync .

Thanks for your thoughts.

Speaking to your router problem. If not already done, make sure the IT guys have the router hooked up to a good UPS (one that supports black out, brown outs and spikes; some UPS's will not support brown outs).

When I took over a site, I noted we had about one or two very brief outages a week -- it never really impacted us except for the odd bit of corruption. After putting the router equipment on to a good UPS, we had no outages for years. Surprize, surprize, the odd corruption went away too.

Next, I noticed that you are very high end geru for this forum. I am sure you have considered a web based solution, or perhaps a DSL or VPN solution. My remote sales guys just love the high speed internet solution over the CompuServe solution and dial up we used to have.

Thanks for your comments willir.

Yes power supply IS a concern.

And yes - the boys with screwdrivers are setting about installing a VPN to connect all of the sites together.

However, they seem to be dragged off onto 'Firefighting' exercises all to ofter and the VPN ready date keeps slipping.

So I'm 'bandaiding' the problem at the moment.

( Also - I'd like to get to the bottom of the problem - if only to maintain my guru status in yet another area!
