replacing sheet music white background with something else

I have a 1 bit black and white png file (black notation on white background) I want to be able to "lift" the black notation off the white background and put it onto a texture/pattern of my choosing. Can anyone tell me how to do this? I'm using PSP 10

Using the Wand Tool, select all the black text, by holding down the shift key and clicking on the black text to select it.

Then copy it to another image with the background of your choosing.

That would take days to select each thing individually, there are guitard chord grids, chord names, and music on a staff.. Is there a way to select everything black in the image all at once? That's really what I need to do I think?

You could try to select the white background instead. It should select all of it. Again with the wand tool. And then from the select menu, choose Invert Selection, this should then select all the black text.

What should the tolerance be set on to do that? any other settings?

Usually around 30 is good. You cna ajust it as you go if it is not selecting enough of the white at the smae time.

And no other setting is necessary.

hmm, it looked like it worked, when I hit cut, all the black disappeared but then when I went to paste into the new image, the white was there again =(

Was the new image a transparent image? or did it have the background in it already?

it was a transparent image I created to be the same height and width

Are you sure the white was not selected?
There should have been the characteristic "Ant trails" around the black. When you cut it off, it should have left the white parts.

Did it paste the entire white part or just some of it?

I figured it out, you have to uncheck the contiguous box for it to get "in between" the black areas too.. Thanks for the help though =)
