As far as backing up and restoring the configuration, what is involved? I've backed up the config. and tried restoring it on a Messaging r4 and it said restore complete, all was left was an automatic reboot in which then the card became stuck in the boot process..

Replacing Merlin Messaging 3.0 with R4 1

IVTROOK, if you have a R3 or R4 Merlin Magix Processor, you get the PROCESSOR to do the MAILBOX programming for you, without having to do them all by hand.
Under SYSTEM, do "Config Merlin Messaging".
This will Build the Mailboxes for the Extensions, Assign them to COVER GROUP 30, Put the Voice Mail Extensions in Group 7929 and set it up to receive calls from Calling Group 30 and set the Voice Mail Ports to Integrated VMI and Rotary enabled.
This saves a TON OF TIME.
Then just about all you have to do next is the AA set up.
