Our merlin messaging 2.5 card is failing so we bought a replacement but it is version 3.0. I have a complete backup of the 2.5 messages included. I made the swap last night and did the restore and everything but the messages came over. Is there something special that needs to be done in order to move/restore the messages? or is it just not possible.

That depends on how you backed up the Merlin Messaging. It sounds like you did it through the System Admin mailbox, which backs up only a limited amount of data (that's because the only place to stick it is on the PCMCIA card, which couldn't contain a complete backup). That's why you've still got your Automated Attendant structure, greetings and such, but no mailboxes.

What you'll need to do is temporarily re-install the failing MerMSG 2.5 card and back up everything to an external PC with Merlin Messaging Administration software loaded on it. That method captures all data, which can then be used to restore to your replacement blade.

Thanks Dagwoodsystems for your reply. i suppose i should have put that in my original post. I did use a PC with merlin admin and did a full backup to include the messages. After the first restore i noticed no messages on my test mailbox so i tried to restore a second time with the same result.

Shucks, I see that the replacement MERMsg is a 3.0, while your original is a 2.5 release. Per Tom Daugirdas, restoring a 2.5 image to 3.0 firmware is going to be limited at best, and possibly damaging at worst.

Given all your available choices, it seems the easiest thing would be to default your existing R3.0 board and return it. Instead, order a R2.5 MERMsg as your replacement so that the restore can be uploaded perfectly (there is no "convert" utility for the image as there exists with the PBX).

The only alternative is to upgrade your 2.5 to a 4.0 and back it up, then upgrade the purchased 3.0 to 4.0 and restore a freshly made backup. You don't wanna go there...it would take far less time to just rebuild everybody's mailbox from scratch.

Thanks Tim. i was thinking the same. package and return.

Such a PITA, I know. But you're a good man to look out for your peers and make it as easy as possible for them.

Keep coming back to the forum, Sam. And be sure to share your own hard-earned knowledge if you've got the bandwidth to do so.
