I have a V440 with 4 drives. Two of the drives are mirrored boot drives. The other two are mirrored and used for a database.

I have to replace the database drives with higher capacity drives.

If I break the mirror and then replace one drive and then recreate the mirror will it come up properly ?

My plan -

Break mirror, replace one drive, recreate mirror, wait for syncronize to finish.
Break mirror, replace the other drive, recreate mirror.

Will this work ?

TIA.

Dan

Veritas has commands to move your data to a new disk. I am not in front of a server right now that I can run vxdiskadm, but the commands are there.

This server has slots only for 4 drives, I cannot add more drives. I have to remove a drive and then plug in a new drive.

dandan123,

from my point of view this procedure should perfectly work ...

BUT:
if you want to do eveything online (database running)
there are drawbacks which come to mind:
* you'll have inconsitent data on the mirror you remove - if something goes wrong - you're lost :/

* you should remove the mirror and the disk from the vm-config, not breaking it by pulling the disk - otherwise you may end up with duplicate entries in "vxdisk list" and other problems

* Last point would be resize volume/filesystem, since the mirror always has the same size as the original

However:
you should do an cold backup of the DB before beginning :)

I'm only concerned about the veritas part.

The server will not be live when I'm making these changes. The database will be shut down.

Log onto sunsolve and search for "replace veritas disk" ; there are a number of documents.
