Hi Guys,

I've got to replace a dead BCM50 R1. All we have in stock is some R2/3s.

Never done this keycode migration before, as replacing HDs always worked for us. Nut this one is knackered.

What's the deal ? Do their keycodes just get moved onto the R2 box ? Does it stay at R2 ? Any gothcas I should worry about ?

Thanks :)

I could be wrong but I think that when you go into the Avaya KRS to move the key codes from the release 1 box to the release 2 or 3 that the KRS will give you the proper codes as it will recognize what version to generate according the the system ID. You would only need an upgrade key code if it was your release 1 box that you were trying to upgrade. This is assuming that your release 2 & 3 boxes have never had key codes generated to them. Avaya will also want the old bcm back or they will charge you for the key codes that you regenerate to the new bcm.

pccal is correct. Just move them from the old to new 50 in the KRS.

The drawback is you cannot restore a 1 database to a 2 or 3. But yes KRS will migrate the keycodes.

Curly, I think you could be wrong on this one. KRS does not care when you regenerate R1 to R2 or R3. You would need your upgrade keycode to go to R5 to R6. I work in the Southern Ontario area & the company that we use for our RMA's with Avaya will often not have a R1 in stock & substitute a R2 or R3. I have never had any trouble regenerating R1 to R2 or R3 BCM's.

V1 and V2 keycodes are the same. You can use a R2 disk with R1 keycodes but would have to rebuild the system again .

If it's working, then leave it alone!.

We also regenerate keycodes from 1.0 to 2.0 or 3.0 here with no problem. The drawback is you have to reprogram the system by hand.

I think what you guys are saying is upgrading to 3.0 would be free as long as you don't mind re-programming from scratch.

Otherwise if doing an upgrade to a live system and keep programming then only the upgrade key code is required.

I had a test BCM 50 with a release 1 to 2 upgrade keycode that I've used to convert customer databases. I wasn't able to get the same keycode to work on a release 3 system from a release 2.

I did however get a confirmation message after I had applied it at release 2, but then I got another message found in the alarm table stating that it was invalid.

Although release 2 is well out of date, it seems to be a more stable release than the original version.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the responses/advice.

Just to clarify for anyone else going forward. I replaced BCM50 R1 with a BCM50b R3

Keycodes migrated fine. Original unit to be shipped back Avaya but all good and system is running R3 and everyone is happy.

That's interesting. Did you have to reprogram from scratch, or were you given the upgrade R3 authcode when you migrated it?.

Reprogrammed from scratch. Was only 10 phones and a fractional rate. Nothing fancy either.

Hadn't got a backup anyways, as it wasn't a system of ours. Just someone in trouble.

One thing I am curious of though. Lets say it was a heavily customized system and there was a recent backup. Obviously I can't load the R1 backup to R3. But I am thinking it may let me spin up an R1 image from a multi-image disk. Restore the R1 backup and then do a usual R1-R3 upgrade at leisure. Would certainly beat hours of programming.
