I wonder if any one can help

Our current exchange server is on its last legs. It is the only server in the site and is configured with connection to our ISP (via an IMC). It was originally set up with badly sized partitions (i.e. a 1 gig C: drive etc). I have been given a super duper PIII 900 mhz with 3*36 gig SCSI hd's. My question is this, rather than taking a note of the settings, backing up the mailboxes, trashing the old box and doing a rebuild/restore, I would like to build the new box, add it to the site (during exchange install) then using the, move mailbox wizard, transfer all of the mailboxes over from the old server to the new server. Then install the internet mail service on the new server (temporarily disabling the IMS on the old box by not pointing it at the ISP). Next move the public folders (I'm not sure quite how to do this yet, would it be as simple as copying pub.edb to the new server??). Once everything is copied over, including all of the configuration settings, can I remove the old server (through a remove server wizard (if there is one??) or remove it using raw mode or something). Once removed I will have a fully functional server almost identical to the original one.

The above method would be great in the sense that I will still have the original server in place should anything go wrong with the new one

I don't know if any of this is possible especially the removal of the server and the public folders. It would be great if you had any advice on alternative methods for Replacing a server.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks & Regards

A good way to do this - and one that worked for me is to
follow the instructions described in the following Knowledge Base article:
Q155216, “XADM: How to Move Exchange Server to a New Computer with the Same Name”

Good Luck!!

In answer to your last question, to remove an exchange server from the exchange organisation, go to Exchange Administrator on your new server, highlight the old server and hit delete... frighteningly easy.....
