I have an aging Windows 2000 Server box that now functions as the main DC. I have a new Windows 2003 Server box that I would like to put in service in place of the 2000 box. I have not upgraded to a 2003 domain yet. I want to transfer DHCP, DNS, WINS etc. as well as data files from the old to the new box. What steps should I take to do this as smoothly as possible?

Thanks!

If the server is to be a DC you will first need to run the following:

ADPREP /FORESTPREP
ADPREP /DOMAINPREP

You will next want to transfer all 5 FSMO roles and make the new server a GC.

Setup DNS first on the 2003 server, then handle WINS and DHCP. You can migrate DHCP using MSKB 325473.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

"You will next want to transfer all 5 FSMO roles and make the new server a GC."...is all of this done on the new 2003 box?

I think this would be a good read too:

faq96-4733

Hopefully a forced removal will not be needed. I'm confident to say don't use that FAQ (since I wrote it) until after you have tried to gracefully do the migration.

The script at the end of the FAQ is useful however for verifying that the server is in fact out of AD metadata.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

Any gotchas I should look out for or failsafes I should consider when running the 2 ADPREP commands?

Thanks!

No but it is always a good idea to run DCDIAG and NETDIAG and make sure there are no other issues to be resolved first.

I hope you find this post helpful.

I only wanted to point you to the FAQ for the script, but I guess Mark got me on the other contents, and yes Mark, I did know you wrote it, and I hope it's being used....

I just wanted to say that I performed the upgrade and the process went well. At first, I tried running the adprep /forestprep and it errored out. But it looked like it never got started. So, I read somewhere online just to try running it again and it worked the second time. Thanks again for the tips!
