I've replaced my old Sony vaio laptop screen for one with a larger display area. The display does not now fill the available space, it has a black strip down the rhs and the display repeats the top few inches underneath. Is is win2k. Can this be fixed? Thanks.

Did you replace the WHOLE laptop with a new one, or just the LAPTOP screen?

if it is the former, then installing the correct drivers for the GFX card and setting the correct NATIVE RESOLUTION should fix that issue...

on the later, the timings that are stored in the electronics of the controller card may have to be updated (if that is possible at all) or the correct controller would also have to be implemented...

I agree w/ Ben, check the drivers for the video card and make sure you have selected the native resolution...I personally don't see how you could put a BIGGER screen in a laptop from the original, check the replacement's manual for the correct native resolution. Does the same thing happen with an external monitor?

Thanks.

I replaced the whole of the lid of the laptop with one from a donor machine. The donor machine had a larger display area, but the lid was standard between the two. Are you suggesting that the display area might be 'hardcoded' into the gfx card?

Thanks again.

Hardcoded" no...but the default resolution might be different. Try playing around with other resolutions (right-click empty area of Desktop->Properties->Settings->Screen Resolutions).

You might need to install the graphics driver from the maker's site (not Dell, but Intel, Nvidia or ATI) for the machine to recognize the display and its native resolution. Find out your graphics card (or chip) by running Belarc Advisor on the system.

There might even be a Dell tool that adjusts your resolution.

Displays have a controller/driver card that has the GEOMETRY settings of the TFT... Some are build in the GFX hardware area on Laptops others are separate and are attached to the display itself, or within the laptop...

TFT Controller Boards

TFT Controller act as an interface between LCD TFT Display and a PC or computer system. They are adjusting signals of the computer to the connected LCD TFT Display and are offering various other features.
