I removed the battery on the mobo and replaced it after 20 minutes to try to get it to allow me to enter the BIOS. No amount of pressing F1, F2, F anything or DEL would let me into the BIOS.

Now windows won't start.

The HDD is spinning and it looks like it tests the CD-ROM. The HDD light stays lit for a bit and then goes out. It wont start from a boot disk either.
Machine is older unit with win98-se. It was working OK until I removed the battery

any ideas?

Thanks

You must make sure that the new CMOS battery is the same voltage and Type as the old one, as some older boards use different batteries. If the voltage is too high, you may have overloaded the BIOS chip, but that is very rare occurrence.
If they are the same type, try moving the CMOS Reset Jumper to it's reset position (normally covering pins 2 & 3 of a 3 pin jumper) and Press the PC's Power button (it won't start)
Then replace the Jumper back to it's original position (normally pins 1 and 2 of the same Jumper) and booting again.
Enter the BIOS and use the Load Optimal or Load Enhanced Values option.
Then reboot again and hopefully windows will start.
If it's does not, send me the BIOS version and type information and I will try to help more...

Hey Jag:
Thanks for the reply.

I removed and replaced the same battery, not a new one.

I have never had to alter jumper settings before so I am new to this (good learning opp though). I don't know where the jumper might be altough I see a blue jumper on the board with a label that says "BIOS Config". It looks to be on pins 2 & 3 looking left to right.

Quickly looking at the board it says Intel CA810.

Oh, oh... the bell goes and the game is over... Can I get back to you in the morning? It's after my alotted working time (according to "she who must be obeyed") so I must attend to the family evening duties.

I will do some Googling in the morning (6am Atlantic) to see what I can find and make contact again. If you can offer up any insight in the meantime please post it.

Many thanks

I was reading the jumpers backwards. It is 3 2 1 from left to right.

Ta da... thanks Jag. That did the trick. We're up and running.

Glad to help! :)
