hi

I am new to TSM , i have a question, is there such thing as a "REORG" in tsm.

i have been told its like a defrag , put all data closer or re-orgaising data on tape which makes restore and retieve quicker

if this is the case can someone advise me on what commands or procedure i should be looking at

please advice

Hi

Careful - reorganising the TSM DB is a non-trivial, disruptive task, that could take >24 hours to complete. The end result is a database with a greater proportion of free space in contiguous lumps. TSM 5.3 introduced the "estimate dbreorgstats" command, which you run against a (quiet) running instance of TSM to see how much space you could recover by working through the process.

Re-organising data on tapes in TSM storage pools, however, is what we refer to as "reclamation", and is a process that should be scheduled to run on a regular basis. It does not require a service outage. TSM 5.3 introduced the "reclaim stgpool" command to control reclamation processing directly. Prior to that, we had to rely on updating the reclamtion thresholds on our storage pools.
