Hi all

Going to install Ubuntu on a pc in my personal Windows network, naming it, for example, 'myserver'.

Once configured the pc will be physically moved to a customer's premises, added to the user's Windows network, but the name given to the Ubuntu server will then need to be changed.

The customer's Ubuntu server name has yet to be decided, so how do you change the name of the Ubuntu server once installed at the clients?

TIA

Assuming this is just a PC with nothing special loaded on it, go to System Menu, Administration, Networking, look on the General tab. Change the name here and reboot (or restart network should do it as well).

chipk

Thanks for your reply.

In Ubuntu server 9.10 there is System Menu > Administration > Network tools.

Under Network tools are tabs - Devices, Ping, Netstat, Traceroute, Port scan, Lookup, Finger, Whois.

So where do you change the name?

You could also edit /etc/hostname with a text editor and reboot.

Huh, sorry, must be a version difference, or I'm just plain wrong cuz I was going from memory.

You can also change this at the command line like so:

sudo hostname $NEW_NAME

That one I verified. ;)
