Rename AD Domain question

Here is my situation... I have clients attaching to a AD server. I had to rename the domain. I did the dcpromo and read the warnings about losing user accounts. But there are only 5-6 users at this site. I renamed the AD domain and everything worked fine. Until I logged onto the client machine and saw that the folder under Documents and Setting was gone. They were using Outlook 2000 for POP3 mail and I assume the .pst file was in there allong with thier My Documents folder.

Is this really how it is supposed to work? If you rename the domain using DCPromo, it will actually remove things from the client machine...?

Please let me know.
 
Look in your Documents and Settings folder on the clients to see if you have folders named something like USER and USER.(newdomainname). When you switch domains like that, the login for the users acts like a totally new user on the system even though it really isn't, and gives the users new profiles.
 
I have done a search for all .pst files while logged on as the Admin and it does not find any. That should look in any folder, including the User.oldomain folders.

Outlook used as a POP3 client does save mail as .pst right...

I am at a loss.
 
Yes, O2K uses PST files when setup as Internet Only and Personal Folders was setup. You weren't storing the PST's on the file server were you by chance?
 
No, they were stored locally. But I think they were in the users folder in the Documents and Settings folder. But that folder no longer exists.

Can renaming the Domain actuallly remove folders and files from the client machines?
 
Did you do a search on the entire hard drives including the different profiles? Glen A. Johnson

Yes, I search the entire thing for *.pst and it found nothing.

This just doesn't seem right. What would happen if you had a large company and you needed to change the domain name due to acquisition?

Would you have to backup every users folder on thier local machine?
 
A domain name change should not affect client machines, as best I know.

Go to a client machines Documents and Settings and make sure your folder view is set so that you can see all files, and manually dig down for the pst files.
 
The folders do not exist. This has happened on two machines. One is W2K Pro and the other one is 2000 Server believe it or not.
 
I have experienced the same problem on ONE machine during a domain name change. Searched everything as administrator..........ZIP....nothing!! Even installed recovery software...........not deleted.......just vanished??? Only one machine though..good for me, not good for the one user.

I have never seen this happen in the years I have been in networking so I have to ask some questions to get my thoughts straight. So don't take this as bieng rude. I am trying to recreate your problem.

1. Are you using Outlook 2000 or Outlook Express
2. Did you search the network for any .pst files
3. Are there 2 users accounts with the same name on the pcs in the Document and settings folder?
4. what are the users folders named like?

Also, if your users were using home folders stored on the server, your .pst files may be located on the server, not the client...although it still looks as though the documents folder is on the client, it may be on the server.
