Hi, I have just rebuild a crashed server, and reuse the old name, it says the account is already exist, it won't let me change it. I have checked the server manager in the DC the name is not on the list. where is this name is stored?
Thanks

Do a search for the name, sometimes they don't show up in the list. Using AD?

Delete the record for the computer in Active Directory Users & Computers, then force replication. You may need to wait a few minutes, then try again.

We have AD but on diff. domain that computer is not on the list... the computer I tried to rename was on NT domain.

From the machine you are "rebuilding" try to add the machine to the domain. If the account you type in has Account Operator or Domain Administrator access you will be able to overwrite the current account.

If not you will need to have the domain administrator delete the old computer account, have the domain sychronized, and then recreate the computer account.

Well, I am administrator, I just can find the entry anywhere, not on AD, or NT DC... may there is a BDC some where, is this possible?

no, it was a member server on NT Domain...I think the problem start when we added a AD domain., but I don't see any entries in AD users & computers.

The server is still in your WINS or DNS databases. Flush the records out and you should be OK.
