I jut bought a used Duron CPU and heatsink. They have been separated and there is still thermal paste left on both (it is the original AMD applied stuff I think). Can I leave this on or should I remove it and use new stuff? If so, how should I remove it? Thanks

you should use new even if you can't get all of the old stuff off. Alcohol works well to remove. Use only a thin coating of thermal paste, it's only to fill the voids between the die and the heatsink.

Thinners as in paint thinners and remove all remnants before applying a small mouse dropping size amount of paste to the raised CPU core.
Recess in base over socket "A" writing be careful.
Martin Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

Acetone type nail polish remover then alcohol
worked for years
