Good day kind folk!

I have just recently run into an issue with some of my machines being hacked [mad], one of the issues involved there was telnet. I have no need for the telnet option to be on my machines, so I would like to fully remove that service and any files/folders related there to. Any guidance, suggested readings, or personnal experiences would helpful. Thanks a bunch, and have a wonderful day/evening!![smile]

If your on a domain just make a GPO that is applied to all you computers that disables the telnet service. You can fing the setting under Computer configuration; Windows settings; system services. Find telnet and set it to disable. Then all you machines will disable the telnet service at logon. And the user/machine cant enable it unless you give them permission in the security box.

andrewpagano,

Windows 2000 indeed comes with a Telnet Server. The telnet server is a service (%windir%\system32\tlntsvr.exe) that can be loaded automatically. I'm not sure of the default state of this service in the different flavors of Windows 2000, but you probably want to set the service to "disabled".

Go to Start -> Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Services and find the telnet server service and disable it. You can't remove the service through the Control Panel -> Add Remove Programs applet - but I'm sure you could use a Resource Kit utility to blow it away completely.
