We have a 7 server NIS environment here and would like to remove two of them and separate them completely for stand alone operations on a different subnet. Do any of you have pretty clear instructions on how to do this? I have some instructions but they aren't too clear and I don't want to screw anything up. I guess they are clear but I just don't understand what's going on with these instructions. Help.

this is what I have....
1. Edit the hosts file and remove the master and slave (I don't understand why this needs to happen)
2. # cp /etc/nsswitch.files /etc/nsswitch.conf
3. # cd /var/yp
4. rm -r binding
5. reboot

Thanks.

Is that Worths a changing the system Identification?
if it is yes then;
sys-unconfig command will do the job. .

THE NIS+ FAQ SAID :)

If you wish to remove NIS+, you should run the following commands on
all of your NIS+ machines:

# cp /etc/nsswitch.files /etc/nsswitch.conf
# /etc/init.d/rpc stop
# rm -f /etc/.rootkey
# rm -rf /var/nis/*
# /etc/init.d/rpc start

It is suggested that you start with the clients, and do the servers
last.

To shorten your procedures, you don't need to remove the ypservers from the /etc/hosts file. just do the following
1. copying of the nsswitch.conf file
2. deleting of the /var/yp/binding directory
3. /usr/lib/netsvc/yp/ypstop

no need to reboot. that's it.
