Hello,

I am working on locking down a computer lab and wanted to remove the "My Computer" Icon from the desktops. The lab is not on a domain and I am using XP Home Edition on them. I have looked in the MMC snap in Locoal Computer Policy - user configuration - Administrative Template - desktop Template but the option is not there. Do I have to do this by modifying the registry? If so How?

Also the reason I am in user configuration and not computer configuration is because I want the administrative account to still have all rights after im done like in aticle ID 293655 on technet

Thanks,
Malik

go to the run command, type 'gpedit.msc'

in the user config section, under 'Administrative Templates' should be a desktop folder. In there there should be plenty of options to lock down the desktop. Removing all icons, just the my computer icon etc.

Hope that helps.

right click on the desktop, go to properties, go to desktop tab, go to customize desktop.

XP Home Edition does not have Group Policy installed, you only have that in the XP Pro version.

Remove My Computer icon from the desktop
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\NonEnum
DWORD: {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} = 1

If any XP Home user is interested in a pseudo Group Policy?

The above has the option you are seeking.

"Bospruell's" option is the easiest.

hey bospruell my copy of xp home edition does not have that feature. I only see it in the pro version.

i guess i will use the registry hack to try and do it. Thanks linney for the info. I might have to get that proggie to make my life a little easier.

Now this is crazy..I blew the machine and reloaded the OS with XP Home with SP1A and guess what came up. Bospruell you was correct, but now I cannot get to the gpedit.msc to lock down the computer. I have to double check and see how old the XP Home version that are on the other workstations.
