I do not have AOL installed on my PC. But when I press Control Panel and Add or Remove Programs it appears in the list. If I choose Remove, I get a message saying that no versions of America Onlne were found. How can I remove this item from the Add or Remove program list? (I suspect it is in the Registry, but I do not know how to find it and make the necessary changes).

Microsoft's Tweakui will also do this, as will Xsetup.
Xsetup has hundreds of tweaks you can do, just be careful not to do too many at once. If you run into problems you won't know which one to change back.

Thank you for the help. I ended up using Tweak-xp pro. It worked perfectly!
