When I run MSConfig there is a lot of references to removed programs especially DEVLDR16.exe, and double entries. How do you remove this stuff from the list?
TIA

You may have to bone up on editing the registry and dive in there...

Here's a great little program that we have a link to at our site that will remove them from the registry for you with a user friendly interfact. I use it all the time We are always looking for new members at our computer forums: Please come join our community too.

Dumdum I must say that is a great program it is small and very easy to use.

Thanks, I gave it a try but it will not remove unused references from the startup tab in ms config , any body have any more ideas?, Like where in the registry would I find these references..............

Which entries are doubled? That would be normal for some like LoadPowerProfile. But you'll find the entries in msconfig at one of the run keys here: (in the right pane)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\current version\run, runonce, runservices, runservicesonce

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\current version\run, runonce

The Run keys with a - next to them like Run- are where the unchecked entries are located.

Yes, so delete the entire keys which have a "-" in front of them or just rename to key to something else. ~Apex1x

It works better if you plug it in.

No you don't want to delete any of the Run keys. You would just delete the entry shown in the right pane.

Still will not remove references to unused (they aren't there) or references to removed programs.
Anyone want to give it another shot Thanks.

When you uncheck a program, its reference is moved to Disabled Services in the registry. In the (excellent) StartupCPL-program, a service can also be deleted.
When a deleted item is right-clicked, one get the option to send it back to the registry !

There's something in this thread that I see happening in others that I don't like...there's too much self-promotion in it.
We're here to fix problems for folks just like us...other users...not to hawk our wares.
At least we oughta' be.
Just my 2 cents.

I dont see what you're getting at gargouille, what do you mean? ~Apex1x
Sattinger's Law:

Referring to the suggestion that such and such an application would fix it...then after the original poster says it doesn't work for this purpose a pointed reference back to it again.
Pointedly, dumdum recommended the startup program, the poster responded it doesn't fix the problem...and then along someone comes and says how great it is...nevermind that it's obviously off-topic.

Ah, ic, gargouille. I think its just a matter of some people not quite "on the ball". It seemed somewhat subtle to me but nevertheless, people should try to pay more attention and focus on giving helpful advice, not opinions on how great their programs are.

Macaw, how are you coming along on removing those registry entries? ~Apex1x

Back to the original question... TweakUI can remove those pesky references in Add/Remove to programs that don't exist anymore. There's always a better way...

mcaww, you're referring to msconfig's startup tab right, not add/remove? What entries don't appear at any one of the 6 or 7 registry Run keys I listed above? They should be in one of them. If they aren't then at the top of regedit click edit then find and search for the name.
