I am using an HTML front end for Mame arcade box I am
making. How can I make IE open files with my HTML front
end without it asking if I want to open or save it?
PLEASE DON'T REPLY SAYING TO UNCHECK THE BOX!
Windows help says this can't be done if you are trying to
open an .EXE, .COM or .BAT file. It does not give you the
option to uncheck the box that says not to ask anymore.
It is greyed out and cannot be unchecked when opening the
above file types.
I'm thinking you can get around this and I'm hoping
someone can tell me. This computer will not have internet
access so I am not worried about security.

Thanks again
Maj

Maj,

When you try and download a .EXE file with Internet Explorer, you are prompted to "Always ask before opening this type of file".

If you uncheck this box, the next time a EXE file is about to be downloaded, you will not be prompted and the file will automatically be opened.

You also do not see the "Always ask..." box again so you can uncheck it.
To reset Internet Explorer back again:

Start Regedit
Go to Hkey_Classes_Root\exefile
Change the EditFlags value from d8 07 01 00 to d8 07 00 00

Hello?? Is anyone READING my post?

I said WHEN YOU CLICK ON AN EXE, COM, OR BAT FILE
IN IE IT ALWAYS ASKS!!! YOU CANNOT UNCHECK THE BOX
BECAUSE IT IS GREYED OUT!! IT IS *NOT* AN OPTION!!!
IT ONLY DOES THIS WITH ZIP AND OTHER FILE EXTENSIONS!!
NOT WITH EXE, COM OR BAT FILES!!!
TRY IT YOURSELF AND LOOK!! YOU CANNOT UNCHECK THE BOX
BECAUSE IT IS *NOT* AVAILABLE. IT IS GREYED OUT AND
NOT SELECTABLE!!!!!!
WINDOWS HELP ALSO EXPLAINS THAT YOU WILL ALWAYS
(HOW CAN I STRESS THE WORD 'ALWAYS' MORE!!!)
BE PROMPTED FOR THESE FILE TYPES!!! *ALWAYS!!!*

TRY IT!!! I BET YOU WILL BE PROMPTED AND *NOT* BE
ABLE TO UNCHECK THE BOX FOR EXE, COM AND BAT FILES.

Hi,

don't be so upset, keep cool.
There is no normal workaround for your problem, because of the dangerous things a evil person could do with this 'feature'.
The only thing you could do is to change some bytes in IE itself, with this changes it will open the files, but this is not very easy and i don't know if it works for IE 5.5 and IE 6.0.
I know only that it was possible with IE 5.0.

I apologize if I seemed upset but I have asked this same
question before. Being VERY specific as to what I wanted
and people replied as if I was some sort of moron who
never noticed the check box. I did not just blindly post
a stupid question that I had not tried to look into at least
a little. I know there is some way to do it. The computer
is not going to have any type of net access. It is stand
alone and designed to perform a specific task so security
was never an issue. I simply want it to execute a file,
ANY file without prompting. period. Simple question. Or so
I thought.

If your reg patch is designed to do just that then thank
you.

Maj

Oh, and Opcode, you said :

"with this changes it will open the files, but this is not very easy and i don't know if it works for IE 5.5 and IE 6.0. I know only that it was possible with IE 5.0"

What changes?

I tried the ones posted by reghakr but the values he told
me to change were already at what he said to change them
to. And this is a clean install of Win98se. No updates
installed yet except DirectX 8. So I tried putting in the
values which he called out as standard and that also didn't
work. Oh well. Guess I'll keep trying.

Maj,

I didn't care for your shouting very much at all.

I didn't know you had posted this before. And if you did, you should have stated what was already proposed. Nor did I think you were a moron or mean to imply that.

And finally, why didn't you try the reg patch before flying off the handle.

I offer my time here to help, simple as that.

Here's another suggestion since you're not worried about security. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools>Internet Options, click the Security tab, then the Custom Level button. Scroll to File Download and click Disable. Now you can open .exe's (let's hope, anyway)

I wasn't yelling, obviously. I was simply typing in caps
to get your attention since like I said, I was VERY
specific in my first post and you replied as if you didn't
even read it at all.
I had already tried the security option (which didn't work)
and I also tried your reg edit, which also didn't work.

So to anyone else reading this thread, I am still seeking
a real solution. Any help would be appreciated. Details
can be found at the top of the post.
