What do you mean by a linked worksheet? A worksheet that has external formulae references?
I don't know of any way how worksheets can be linked like how worksheets are linked in an Access table. unless you using some sort of query program like MS Query, but even that mainly opens up the workbook that it's in.

Correct - External formulae references would create such a link. However this file should not be referencing anything external. It was created from scratch & does not have a need to link externally.
When I open the specific file (I'll call it abc.xls), Excel asks if I want to update abc.xls with linked workbooks. I answer no because the file should not be linked to anything. Even if I answer yes, there are no changes made because there is nothing to change.
Then I go to Edit/Links. There is another file (I'll call it lmnop.xls) that is actually linked abc.xls. The only options for me are to open lmnop.xls or update the location of lmnop.xls or pick another file to link to. However there is not an option of removing the link altogether. I have discover in my search that there is a "delete link" button in newer versions of Excel but not Excel 97. Any internal help features only lead to setting up links. Web searches lead to Excel 2000 or beyond where the solution is easy.
I would like abc.xls to be wild & free on its own, linkless, like any other ordinary Excel file. Any help would be great.
It states how phantom links can start in cases where you copy tabs without links from another workbook where links exist. When you paste in your new workbook, you can carry the links forward even though the tabs were linkless.

I was able to delete the link by pointing the spreadsheet to itself in the references. Seems a little querky. It seems like MS should give you an automatic option to delete all linked references
