I have several directories that need different levels of security. I have them set to show the directories and files instead of "real" web pages. Of course when showing the index the user can click a link called "Parent Directory". If the user goes far enough they will see my /var/ directory. Can I remove the link for the Parent Directory or should I put this information somewhere else? Thanks.

The directory that is displayed as the "Parent Directory" the same as the directory you have assigned as "DocumentRoot."? Unless you use the "Alias" directive, nothing above the DocumentRoot should be able to be accessed. Otherwise the DocumentRoot and everything below it is considered your web space by apache. If the directory must be under the DocumentRoot, then change the permissions so only the owner has access. I'm having a problem with why you would have a web server and not want anybody to have access to your web site. It may be that I just don't understand what you are trying to do.

Thanks for your response. Let me try to clear things up. I have two different companies using the same server. Then I have customers who should not see anything but their own documents. Here is what the structure looks like:

Company1/
Company2/
Customers/

Company1 and Company2 requre a username and password to enter but I don't want to do that for all the customers. I don't want the customer to be able to see this structure but the two companies will need to be able to enter the Customers/ directory.

This is more or less a web based version of Windows Explorer so all that these "web sites" consist of are directories and files. There is no HTML coding. Does this help? I'll try your suggestion. Thanks again.

So if I understand correctly, what you want is an ftp server rather than an http server. By default all users of your system will be logged into their own /home/ directory. You could set this up as a "chroot jail" where this is the only place they can see or go to. Then you could set up 2 groups. One for each company. When a user signs in with his name and password, they will be sent to the dir you want them to go to based on the group they belong to. If this sounds more like what you want, then we just need to know what OS you are running so we can help you find a good ftp server.

RhythmAce - I never thought of that but I don't think I want to use the FTP server. My firewall is blocking FTP traffic for everyone unless I know their IP address. I don't want to open it up to everyone. Good idea though!

Wullie - I think that would be my first choice. Can you provide some assinstance in setting up a subdomain? Thanks.

wullie,
Are you still willing to help me with my subdomain problem? If so I posted a better explanation of my problem as "Subdomain an IP address". Thanks for your suggestion of the subdomain.
