I am at the last stages of migrating to exchange 2003. I have installed exchange 2k3 on a new server moved all the mailboxes over with no issues.

I have followed the instructions on msexchangeinfo.org as well as other sites. I have some issues before i remove the first exchange 2000 server from the domain.

Last weekend I moved the RUS and Offline address book to the new server. I then removed the old server from the SMTP connector as a bridge. I also changed the private IP of the old server and change the new server to the old servers IP. I updated all DNS records for the domain to point to the new server. Once that was done I could not send out emails. I kept getting NDR messages about it being stuck in a loop and the message bounced between servers.

What did i do wrong. Must i rebuild RUS on the new server? Should I wait to change the IP addresses?

I also have several different connectors from the old server that are not used anymore. Will these be removed when i removed exchange 2000 or do I need to remove them manually?

I really need to get old server out ASAP. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Robert

How is your SMTP connector set up on the new one? Is it set to send email via the IP of the old one? If so, when you change IP addresses, you'll need to change it there too otherwise it essentially will be sending outbound email to itself.

No it is set to route mail via DNS. If it was set to send via IP where would I look on the connector? I have looked everywhere.

I forgot to mention in my previous post. I also made the new server the routing group master.

I think we're quite literally on the same page!

In the connector, look at the general tab. You've got it set to use DNS to route. Underneath that is forward. If you use a bridgehead, you can forward all mail to it using IP or FQDN.

That box is blank. Only DNS is selected.

I have questions about connectors.

I have the following connectors listed in EM. Which ones are needed and which ones or not needed.

Internet Mail Service (Exchange) I believe this is from an old server. The delete option is greyed out.
Internet Mail Service (Exchange1) Old Server
SMTP1
Connector for MS SchedulePlus
MS Mail Connector (Exchange1)
Connector for cc:mail (Exchange1)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

You can certainly lose the MS Mail and ccmail unless you know you need them. I seem to recall you can get rid of them by doing add/remove in Exchange setup.

SchedPlus can possibly go - can't recall if that does legacy stuff.
IMS connectors - got any further info?
SMTP1 - what's that?

SMTP1 is my SMTP connector that is just the name of it. I dont use internet mail service that i know of just SMTP. These connectors were setup on the old server so I assume when i remove exchange 2000 from the old server these connectors will be removed.

What are the proper steps to follow to remove the first server.

RUS
Offline Address book
Routing group master

Is there anything else I am missing.
