Hello, i am running a Windows 2000 Active Directory network. i have 2 DCs at my main loaction with 3 others in remote locations. All part of the same doamin. when the domain was originaly setup, the system volume on the DC was sized kindof small. Since this was the original DC, can i remove it from the domain and rebuild it without destroying my domain? I would use dcpromo and make sure it holds no FSMO roles.

Thank you for any help.

I would transfer the roles first (before using dcpromo) and also make sure an existing dc retained the global catalog...

If you have another DC locally, you can dcpromo and it will automatically transfer any FSMO roles to other DC. Definately make sure you have another GC up and running and also verify any services your DC was taking care of are handled by another server (DHCP, DNS, etc).

I'm Certifiable, not certified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

Thank you for the replies. I think that my worries go back to the NT 4.0 days where if you removed the DC that you initialy installed and setuped the domain, then it would bring down the domain. But i believe that is no longer the case with win2k and win2k3 domains.

thanks again.
