I applied the encryption to My DOcuments, so that everything saved within it would be encrypted. However, I can't copy files from My Docs to somewhere else, without first removing the encryption, so that the copied file can be opened by someone else (also emailed via hotmail cannot be opened by recipient).

I've removed the encryption from the files, but all new files are still being encrypted. I tried to remove the encryption from the folder, but since My Docs is 'read-only' it cannot remove the encryption and I cannot remove the read-only.

Try uninstall SP2 and make your changes under SP1a.

I vaguely remember this being a problem with encryption and updating ServicePacks. I don't have a handy reference to it but I believe Microsoft are aware of it.

Here's what I did to fix it:

1. Copied all files within My Docs to another folder.
2. Properties of My docs within Explorer, under Target, moved it to somewhere else.
3. Now I can delete the C:\My Documents Folder.
4. Rename folder that copied all files to.
5. Moved target back to C:\My Documents. Now have an unencrypted folder.

OK, this just might work:

I'm assuming you moved your My Documents folder from its default location. Moving it back to this location may do the trick. Try this:

Right-click Start, then choose Explore. Near the top of the tree (just below Desktop) you will see My Documents.

Right-click on it & select Properties. In the My Documents Properties dialog box, click on the Target tab. Then click the Restore Default button.

After all your documents have been moved to the default location, try again to change the Read Only attribute of the My Documents folder.

Not sure if this will do the trick, but it's worth a try.

Regards,
Doc
