I am running Win 98 SE.
My son installed Win 98 fastshutdown patch onto my computer. I now do not have the option of Sleep mode or Standby which I used to have. I cannot therefore put my computer asleep. How do I remove this patch so as I can use the sleep button which I have on my Internet keyboard.

SeaSider:

Disabling fast shutdown in Windows 98 changes the FastReboot value data from 1 to 0 in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Shutdown

Here are the steps:

Click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information.

On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.

(you can also get here by using Start, Run, "MSCONFIG")

On the General tab, click Advanced.

Click to select the Disable Fast Shutdown check box, click OK, and then click OK.

You do not say why he installed the patch. It is usually done to try and cure shutdown problems with 98, if this was the case you may not want to remove it

When I followed the instruction as outlined below i do not have "Disable Fast Shutdown" option in the Advanced section of MS Config". PLease advise further. Thanks

On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.

(you can also get here by using Start, Run, "MSCONFIG")

On the General tab, click Advanced.

Click to select the Disable Fast Shutdown check box, click OK, and then click OK.

I was not having problems shutting down the machine but my son thought that by installing this Windows patch that the computer would shut down faster. All he has done is disable the "Standby" or Sleep option on shutdown. When I now select the sleep button on my keyboard all I get is a quick flash of a screensaver and then the computer goes back to normal.

How can I reset my computer to give me the Sleep option.

Have you tried MKB..? The Shutdown Supplement (Patch) removes the Disable Fast Shutdown check box which Klick referred to. see bottom of post

Standby Missing From Windows Shutdown Dialog Box

LoadPowerProfile Starts Twice When You Start Your Computer [Q187611]

Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, System Properties Device manager tab. Double click Advanced Power Management support, place a check in [Disable in this hardware profile] box and shut down. Reboot and go back and remove the same check you just added, reboot again and Stand By will be restored.

"The Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement also contains an updated Troubleshooter for Startup and Shutdown issues. The Fast Shutdown option is no longer available in the System Configuration Utility (Msconfig.exe). "
