Hi folks,

I was wondering ...

Under XP Professional you can enable Remote Desktop as well as specify a Remote Desktop User in the system settings.

Under XP Home this option is missing ...
There's only a Remotesupport option. But when I enable this I'm still unable to connect to the machine via mstsc ...

How can I do this under XP home ?

Regards
Thomas

Remote Desktop is not included with Windows XP Home Edition, but Remote Assistance is. RDP is available in XP Pro. XP Home can only act as a client in a Remote Desktop connection, it cannot be the server. Basically you can connect to an XP Pro computer using XP Home with RDP, but not vice versa.

- Frequently Asked Questions About Remote Desktop

Q. Is Remote Desktop available on Windows XP Home Edition?

A. No, however you can upgrade from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Professional to get Remote Desktop. You can use Windows XP Home Edition as the client for accessing your Windows XP Professional computer running Remote Desktop.

You can install the Remote Desktop Connection Software from the XP Home or XP Pro CD, or download it from the following link. See the link below for directions.

- Remote Desktop Connection Software Download

When trying to connect to another computer, you must make sure that the ports used for RDP are not blocked by a firewall, to enable the connection. RDP uses port 3389. See the following link for help setting your computer up for Remote Desktop.

- Get started using Remote Desktop with Windows XP Professional

There are several other apps to enable remote capabilities though. Try out one of the flavors of VNC. TightVNC and UltraVNC are free to use.

- TightVNC Software

- Recommendation: TightVNC free remote control

- UltraVNC
