I need to shutdown remote XP system via Telnet command. source is not a PC...but sends commands to manage remote PC. Any recommendations for an app to run on the remote PC to do this? THANKS!

Can you recommend a Telnet Server to allow that to work?

Control Panel-->Administrative Tools-->Services-->Telnet Server (on the XP machine being telnetted to).

Burt

Thanks. I set it up, and connected to remote PC via Telnet client...but can't seem to get anything to happen.

From TCP Client Window:
Connecting to 100.168.1.203 ...
Connected to 100.168.1.203
{FF}ý%{FF}û{FF}û{FF}ý'{FF}ý{FF}ý{FF}û

shutdown -f

Any thoughts? Should it prompt for login?

I do...but no prompt...just:
{FF}ý%{FF}û{FF}û{FF}ý'{FF}ý{FF}ý{FF}û

What does it do at the command prompt, rather than the Telnet Client?

Burt

What does the Shutdown command do at the cmd prompt...works fine (although I use "shutdown /r" for restart).

Was that your question?

No---does it prompt you for a login???

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>telnet x.x.x.x

Burt

From another PC...Login as follows (No password).

Welcome to Microsoft Telnet Client
Escape Character is 'CTRL+]'

You are about to send your password information to a remote computer in Internet zone. This might not be safe. Do you want to send anyway(y/n): y

Okay...now you're telnetted in...now shutdown /r or shutdown /f
Or, RDC into the box, and shut it down that way. I guess I'm not understanding what the problem is here...

Burt

The issue is the sending-source is not a PC....and runs headless...and automates PC shutdown. I'm looking for an app that runs on the target PC...and receives a simple UDP command, and executes certain functions like 'shutdown'...

I may have found one, but need to test...
