I need to be able to reboot a win2k server from a remote win2k pro machine, is there a command line tool? or do i have to purchase a 3rd party software.

cheers

Shutdown.exe is a command line utility that is avaiable with the resource kit that will allow you to perform shutdown/reboot of a remote NT/2000 server.

psshutdown from sysinternals works great. It is also free.

PSSHUTDOWN is especially good. I would recommend though, that you use PSLIST (another of the tools in the PSTOOLS suite at sysinternals) to see if there are any instances of MMC.EXE running on the remote system, and kill them, otherwise the shutdown might hang and you won't be able to connect to it again until someone goes to the console and hits the 'don't save settings' button. This happens a lot in my shop.

We use a third party tool called Dameware. If you do buy one this is a super tool for troubleshooting. There is no install for remote NT or w2k. The features are endless. Of course it is a hog on remote client resources, but it's worth it.

Cheers for all the replies, much appreciated.

Another way to do this: on the win2k pro box go to the Computer Management MMC, right click on "Computer Management - Local" and select Connect to Another Computer. Enter the server's name, then you'll get the computer management console for that server.

Right-click on Computer Management - <Servername> and select Properties. Click on the Advanced tab and go to Shutdown. In there you'll see some restart options.

Longer than command line, but free!

Is there any tool of this sort for NT Server 4.0, I mean like the Computer Mgment for 2000? Thanks in advance

Why not install Terminal Services in Admin mode. You get two free licencses. I use this all the time to re-boot servers we have in other cities. Plus, since you have a server, it's included so it's free. Glen A. Johnson

Belynda, if you have a Windows2000 system, even W2KPro, you can still use the "Manage Computer" tool to manage NT 4.0 Servers. As far as other tools for NT, the Sysinternals "PSSHUTDOWN" and other PSTOOLS work on NT, and if you want a full-featured computer management tool for NT and W2K, check out Hyena

Can anybody help???
I changed my username and password from win2k pro and cannot get in anymore. what I did was... I went to the users section in the control panel, deleted the password and left the field blank. I logged off, and when I tried logging back on it wouldnt let me in with or without the password. I am afraid to lose the info already stored on the computer. Can anybody help???

hi wzayne ,

Try to logon with another user on Your win 2k pro if u have.Or If u another PC on then connect your HDD to secondary of that machine and find Sam file from the secondary HDD and rename it. And connect Hdd back again and try to login with administrator with blank password. I have done this and it works.

Try this out.

PC Anywhere. I set the host to run as a service and I log into PCAnywhere and reboot it.
