I've tried to get a serial connection going with the Norstar Remote Utilities CD - I've got everything from the laptop to the serial cord, and all that jazz. I tried to go the route of 'dial up networking' serial programming, but to no avail.

I've seen in the manuals that you can use a NIC (network card). As being a PC guy as well, what kind of NIC can you use for this to work? What kind has worked in the past, and do you need drivers?

Not in a hurry, just tinkering to increase the ole brain pan capacity. Thanks!

Dave,
are you trying to use NRU off the CD without installing it on your laptop. I'd advise installing it to you C drive, then use it. Also, if you are there on site, and are contecting directly to the serial port of the Rad, you may want to use COM1 and make sure the NRU connetion is set to direct.

I'm trying to use a RAD model NT8B80AN hooked up to my MICS KSU on a regular phone port.

The red light on RAD blinks a lot when plugged into KSU. Don't have the manual so I'm not sure what that means.

F** leaves phone screen blank for 10 seconds and then time reappears. When RAD not plugged in F** gives feature inactive.

When I try to connect to RAD over serial with utils it tells me invalid password.

How do I get this thing to work?

On a side note, is the serial protocol for this thing documentted?

Anybody reversed it for use under unix or just a open utility. Maybe Visual Basic etc.

Well you are going in to many directions to start off with .
To hook up directly on site VIA the RAD ..
make sure the hard wire connections are made from laptop to RAD hooked up to COM 1 on the laptop and the serial connection on the RAD.
next start up NRU
After it is started up create a account for the site .
in the account set up is where you tell the RAD the password . make sure the password to asscess the RAD VIA 73xx (F9**) is the same as what you put in the field for RAD password . Also depending on the version of the RAD your System ID # must match the System ID in the RAD .
~Note~
Make sure your rad is programmed before you try to connect VIA NRU .
To access your RAD you ..
F9** the the password (I am not sure what the default password is)
Select GEN and make sure the system ID is in there . I like to use the Main line # for the office as the system ID (the 10 digit #)
next make sure your password is in there this is what must match your password in NRU .
after this is done you can also asign a line for the rad to answer if you want so you can have remote dial in access anytime you want ..
If you chose to do this make sure you use a line that is for outbound use only ..wouldn't want someone tryin to call the office get the RAD ..

The probelem might some kind of incompatibility between KSU and RAD.

My friendly Nortsar installer came by and I hooked up his Fast RAD where I had my RAD and I could backup the system no problem. Go into F9** and set password etc.

Hooked my RAD backup and it still doesn't work.

The problem is even without computer hooked up to RAD I can't access the RAD with F9**. It just won't respond.

I gave it to my installer to try on a few other systems to see if it's just a version issue.

The only thing I can think of is to verify that a station port is going to the rad and not a CO line .
I had a installer at a remote site bridge in a CO Pots line and it really screwed up the Rad .
After you verify that it is a station port going into your rad
do a
F**266344 (password-default is 266344 <config>)
In maint. you should be able to do a port status make sure the station port is good .

This can always be tested by plugging in a 73xx where the rad is .
As far as the KSU knows that is just another ext. If you find a tip helpful Please take a moment to mark it as such.

I'm taking over admin of a Norstar system. <gee thanks> I've got Nortel experience, but on the Wireless side.

I've got a RAD and the Remote Utils CD.

How do I hook up the RAD to the Norstar? I'll try your tips above for the RAD to PC connections. And a copy of the RAD manual would be fantastic.

I may be wrong but it sounds like Daveyboy2 isn't trying to connect to a RAD but is trying to connect to a NAM using the Norstar Voice Mail Manager found on NRU. Sounds like he has an older NAM - newer ones come with NIC card, VGA card - all the bells and whistles.
First things first - check your NAM to see if Manager is even installed, to find this out log into feature 983 then at the MBOX AA OTHR display dial 44 this will show you what is installed.

Thanks - I did post I'm trying to get into a NAM. It is an older (?) NAM II Copper, with no NIC. It does have a VGA card and modem. If I can't do a serial connect directly from a laptop - what else do I need to do?

In other words - do I need a RAD to conenct to a NAM with NRU?

If I don't have a RAD on the system, and am looking to get a NIC card for the system, (which I heard was easier to hook into) do I need extra software for that?

Feature 983 and 44 gives me the key codes. It's a MOD 4. But I don't know what that has to do with it. Thanks! -= Beer is food! Is it suppertime? =-

The RAD is for connecting to the ICS.

Norstar Voice Mail Manager is the client portion of a client/server application. The server portion of the software resides on the NAM and Feature 983 - 44 not only allows you to input keycodes but it should also tell you if the server portion of NVM Manager is on the NAM. If you don't see &quot;NVM Manager&quot; then the server portion isn't installed on the NAM and even if you managed to install a NIC card and the drivers you still wouldn't be able to use the NVM Manager program. Also in NRU there are two versions of NVM Manager - 3.0 and 4.0
What is your Norstar Voice Mail's software version?
To find it - Feature 983 - 9

You are around the cutoff point in the nam production where they switched from a terminal session (hyperterminal ) to dialup networking. I think that was done in early 3.0 sometime. Hyperterm settings are: 9600?,8, n, 1 , x on x off , if it dosn't work in one nine pin serial port try the next. The first password is ADMIN the second password is SYSMGR. I have skipped several steps and I am not sure of the speed.

Also just installed FastRAD on old 8X24 modular DR5
When I login and connect it takes about 5 min. to load page with line and stations. System seems verry slow. 25 min for a backup. Connection type is direct, cable is 9 pin straight thru, baud set for 9600 (also tried 19200)Software being used is Norstar Manager 3.5 out of NRU 9.0 Used M7310 to set up Fast RAD also tried Remote Set. Any comments or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, but the speed your getting sounds about right - on every 8x24 system that I have backed up (about 30) it has taken 15 to 30 minutes (depending on the size) and I don't even bother trying to program using Manager - it is just too slow. 9600 is the recommended baud rate for Norstar Manager.
