Remote printer wizard install no ports listed

I am trying to run the printer wizard remotely to install a "print to file" printer. I run the following command to bring up the printer wizard for the remote machine:

RUNDLL32 PRINTUI.DLL, PrintUIEntry /il /c\\computername

The printer wizard opens and the next screen brings me to the "select a printer port" screen, however, it has NO ports listed. There is nothing listed in the ports drop down box at all...obviously this creates a problem.

I've searched for some kind of answer to this problem but it seems as though no one else has posted anything about any similar issues.

Does this sound familiar to anyone or does anyone have any suggestions on what might fix the issue?

Thanks!

I'm not familiar with exactly you're trying to do, but what about firewall on the target computer that hosts the printer??

No, we have all the firewalls all manually disabled so that's not a factor.

Can you create a port?
The Other option in that dialog is Create a Port.

alternatively does the user you are doing this with have Administrative privileges on the remote computer?

I am completing the action as a domain admin.

As far as the "create a port" option, it is completely grayed out and not available.

Try this out:

Not sure if it will work, but it seems to address th eort issue, with a registry edit.

@Vacunita: Can you repost that link? Half is a 404 error and the other has nothing to do with printers. Thanks :)

Sorry apparently the link got processed by the TGL.

Here it is again:

I checked and tried all the suggestions on the links but none helped. It could be because these are talking about tcp/ip ports, however, I'm not trying to add a port printer but a file printer.

Have you tried forcing the port?
use the /r switch and specify the FILE: port.

... /R "FILE:" /c ...

If it still not working, it may be down to some type of group policy that's locking down the ports, and the Create new Port options.

Cause I just tried in on my domain, run the command from my workstation to install the file printer on one of the servers and had a long list of ports to choose from, and the Create a Port option was available.
