We have 7046-B50 and pSeries IBM systems that we would like to be able to power down remotely. Solaris has a "init 5" command that shutdown the OS and powers off the hardware. I was hoping that there might be something similar in AIX.

We need this because our AC unit has been very unreliable and we want the ability to remotely power down the systems so they are not generating heat. We are looking at a COTS solution for shutting the systems down during an AC failure, but want a manual method in the mean time.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Joe

Look at the "shutdown" command. On modern hardware, a software shutdown takes just about all of the hardware down but leaves the service processor running. The major heat-generating components are powered down.

You can powerd off the B50 with the shutdown command but not powerd on because the B50 have no service processor. So you don't powerd on the server remotly.
