Hi

I know zero about linux but a client has purchased from PC World an Acer Notebook loaded with linux.

They have asked me to set up remote access to their office XP machine, at the present time they are using Windows terminal services\remote desktop from their home xp pc system.

I know I could use vnc but recently (and confirmed on the web) I have has security issues with hackers using the vnc port to gain entry.

Would appreciate any suggestions

thanks

Ian

There is a RDP client for Windows Remote Desktop thru linux. Please post your distro and I will try to help.

It works great FWIW.

[root@netwatch ~]# yum remove windows
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Setting up Remove Process
No Match for argument: windows
No Packages marked for removal

OH YEAH!

Sorry, my stomach told me it might be an atom PC. Probably, not an easy task taking you down the road of getting it installed for that distro. I might be easy, but I haven't got my hands on a ATOM yet.

I agree about putting :5800 and :5900 on the web, but even if they use the RDP, :3389 is open.

I will assume there is no firewall, becuase that would allow you to filter that port.

If you are in a corner, you might use SSH on the windows box and setup local port forwarding to the laptop. You would need to write a little shell script on the laptop that they could double click to initialize the connection. and then they would be able to VNC in via web from the laptop.

Just a thought. There is a couple of ways to skin this cat.

Additionally, it would be able to access from anywhere.

[root@netwatch ~]# yum remove windows
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Setting up Remove Process
No Match for argument: windows
No Packages marked for removal

You might consider looking at rdesktop. It allows RDP to the native XP RDP server. Works in Xwindows but runs out of the command line. I will post an example for you. I use it all the time and it is great!

You will need to get the code from
Much better than VNC for connecting to your XP machine. Bear in mind for this to work you will have to be running XP Professional as Home doesn't have RDP built in.
