I've been having issues trying to connect through Remote Desktop to a few different servers I work with. The connection will open and the login screen will appear. However, after I log in it just show a frozen 'logging off' window. It seems to be that this is left over from a previous connection that froze. Is there any way to force these frozen sessions to close? Also, does anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem?

I dont know off hand what might be causing the freeze ups, but if you suspect that you are logging to a previous disconnected session, you can set it in Terminal Configuration manager to end any disconnected sessions.

There is an option to end the session if the session limit is reached or the connection is broken.

Make sure you completely log off the remote desktop session and see if that helps.

If there are current sessions that are stuck logging off, open Terminal Services Manager at the console and logg off those sessions manually. When disconnecting, make sure you choose logoff rather than just hitting the X to disconnect.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Another troubleshooting measure you can try is using console mode. Try this command from a RUN prompt:

mstsc /console /v:192.168.1.1

Just replace your IP there and try it. This will force everyone else out and only allow your session. It will also interact with the console desktop session.

If you install the Adminpak from the server's Windows\System32 directory onto your desktop you can use the Remote Desktops snap in that will be added to your Administrative Tools. This gives you the ability to save the connection information (including password) and also gives you a check box to connect to the console (while allowing the other two remote sessions to remain active).

If you use this console, be sure to maximize your Window before onnecting. The window scales to the available size when connecting and then won't resize after that.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
