Is there a way to limit the number of users who are remotely connected via Remote Desktop to Server 2003? I've checked local and group policy but haven't seen a setting that does this.

Thanks in advance.

Hello SnoopFrogg,

Terminal Services in 2003 should support only 2 concurrent connections, and of course the actual console. Unless you need fewer than 3 potential connections (2 remote, one local), I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm trying to limit the remote connections to one. I'm running a point of sale application on this server that crashes during certain operations if somebody else remotes in.

I havent seen any specific setting limiting the amount of concurrent connections. What you can do to restrict connections is limit the amount of user accounts added to the remote users group. By default Terminal Services allows 2 concurrent administrative logons. This I dont think is negotiable. I would have sworn I saw a setting where you can set specific numbers of concurrent connections, but I work in a few different network environments so I might of gotten it confused with something else.

schtek,

Your link gives informative information, but I think the first poster wanted to know if there was a setting that would explicitly let you set the number of users that can log in remotely, i.e. a dialog box where you can input a number of 15, or 25 users who can logon

No he dont, he wants the numer of users that can logon to be one and normaly its two...

You could set it up so that only 1 user is a member of the 'Remote Desktop Users" group, then set the option of "allow multiple ts connections per user" to no. I dont remember the exact setting name, but there is something to not allow more than 1 connection per user. If only 1 user has rights to logon and you only allow 1 session per user, then your problem is solved.

All,

Thanks for leading me down the right road. I found a solution and I didn't have to restrict the Remote Desktop Users group. I completely overlooked the Terminal Services administration options under Administrative Tools initially. Here's what I did:

1. Administrative Tools -> Terminal Services Configuration
2. Connections folder
3. Right-click the appropriate connection on the right pane
4. Properties -> Network Adapters tab
5. Set maximum connections to one

Thanks again.
