remote desktop hangs before login with blank grey screen

Hi Guys,

I am having a problem with one of my servers. When attempting to login via remote desktop, the remote desktop connection panel comes up and i enter in the server name after hitting the connect button, the remote desktop window comes up but just remains grey and no "log on to windows" box pops up. i have left it to hang for hours and it does not come up.

The funny thing is that even when attempting to connect via the console directly, the same grey screen is displayed.

The other funny thing is that the fileserver and other applications we run off this server such as content management and bug tracking all work fine. i can connect to the services remotely and event viewer, even regedit, just not the remote desktop. I cant restart terminal services for some reason, but i have tried restarting all the services i could think of that might affect it.

We had the same thing happen and had to hit the power button on the server yesterday, i was going to look at it when i got to work this morning but it had happened again and im locked out again.

any ideas anyone? ever had any problems like this before?

Unfortunately you can't restart the terminal service. Have any patches been applied recently? I can't remember which one (not much help right now i know) it was but i remember a few people having a similar issue a few months ago and it turned out to be a particular patch.

I see Thanks for the tip! Do you remember at all if there was a workaround for this? If its a patch that is a problem, can i apply an additional patch to fix it?

Thanks again for your advice, tomorrow morning im going to search around for any info about patches bocking remote access.

FYI - i just restarted the server again and both console and remote desktop are working fine.

I'm sure they found a solution but it's not coming up on the forum search. Typical.

Have you applied any patches recently?

yeah i applied the latestservice pack but that was a couple of weeks ago and this problem only came up in the last couple of days.
