I am trying to get remote desktop working on my home computer so that I can connect at work. At home I have a small home network with a linksys router/hub. I enabled "allow people to connect remotely to my computer" box and made sure that my local user name was there. When I hook another computer up to the network and try to connect to my computer using remote desktop it gives me an error that "the client couldn't connect to the remote computer". I verified that the client was trying to connect to port 3389 and that the host was set up to listen on 3389. What could be the problem? What can I do to troubleshoot this?

Thanks,

kind of, it is set to forward, but I haven't configured static IPs on my home network to make it work properly yet. However, since I'm testing remote desktop on the internal LAN first, This shouldn't make a difference, should it?

From within the network, it won't matter as long as you're trying to connect to the correct internal IP address. Are you trying to connect by IP address or by name? Are there any software firewalls running on the host computer? This includes XP's built-in firewall.

I'm trying to connect using the internal IP address. I turned off the firewalls on both computers...I just read something that implied that my computer had to be locked before it would allow remote desktop connections, is this true?

the user does have a password.

one wierd thing, I tried to enable "remote desktop over the web," where you should be able to connect using an internet browser. on the internal network I was able to log into the first log in box using the user name and password. It then asked what computer I wanted to log into, no matter what I tried (related to the host computer) it wouldn't let me in.

some more info, I tried running netstat -an and apparantly the computer isn't listening over port 3389. Is there anyway I can force it to listen?

Are you sure you don't have any other firewalls running? Maybe one that was installed with your antivirus software?

yes, I turned off my antivirus software and the one that came with windows and it still didn't listen on the correct port. I tried changing the port and it still didn't work also

remain,

You stated that your computer is not listening on port 3389. Is the Remote Desktop service running? Check your event log for errors, that should give you more information.

Wishdiak

I checked the event log, didn't see anything unusual. Checked services and compared with the computer that did work. Nothing unusual.

I finally gave up and reinstalled XP. It's working now

For future problems also make sure you enable terminal server client on the workstation you are trying to remote control.
