I can't connect from the client computer remotely to Windows XP Professional. I was able to connect to the remoter computer with Windows ME on the client side but can't connect with Windows XP Home.

The error I get is this:
"The client could not connect to the remote computer.

Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection."

What can I check to fix this problem?

Thanks,
Craig

Check your IP addresses and make sure there are no conflicts. Can the remote computer access the internet?

IP address is correct. Yes, the remote computer is connected to the internet. The computer with Windows XP home is remotely setup the same as the computer with Windows ME.

Can XP Home Ping XP Pro?

Is the firewall on either machine allowing access?

XP Home can't ping XP Pro.

I've looked at the Windows Firewall settings on the XP Home computer and can't find anything that would prevent connecting to XP Pro. The XP Pro machine allows access and has been tested successfully. The problem is on the XP Home side.

Try this,

*Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system. Before making changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data on the computer.

1. On the client, navigate to the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSLicensing.

2. Click MSLicensing.

3. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.

4. In the File name box, type mslicensingbackup, and then click Save.

If you need to restore this registry key in the future, double-click mslicensingbackup.reg.

5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion of the MSLicensing registry subkey.

6. Close Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

When the client is restarted, the missing registry key is rebuilt.

Hope this helps.

I still don't have a solution for this problem. Any other suggestions?

Are you using a blank or empty password on that XP Home version at logon?

Is there a local user entry (preferably as local Administrator) on the XP Pro machine with the same username and password for that Home user?

The XP Home computer does not have a logon password.

The XP Home user does not have the same username as the XP Pro machine.

If you're referring to entering the same username and password as the XP Pro administrator from the XP Home machine to connect remotely, then yes I am. I thought you were referring to the actual user account logon at system startup verses remote desktop logon. I have verified the username and password is correct to log onto the XP Pro machine.

You have it right.

If you flip back to the XP Home machine, does it still permit access?

What do you mean flip back? The XP Home machine can't act as the remote pc. This is not a feature of XP Home. Only XP Pro can perform remote both ways with other XP Pro or NT computers.

I meant to try to access the XP Pro machine again from the ME machine.

I am concerned it is refusing any connection.

It is possible that because the ME and XP Pro computer are part of the same broadband network is the reason that it works. The XP Home pc is not on the same network as the XP Pro computer. However, in the past I have been able to connect to the XP Pro computer from an XP Home computer but was using a different broadband internet provider.
