I am trying to connect to a server using a VPN and then Remote Desktop Connection on my laptop. However, I can ping the server.

When I try connecting using my Dell Desktop, I connect with no problem. Both machines are running Windows XP Pro, SP2 and using Comcast cable.

Any ideas? I have spent so much time on this problem!

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Do you have remote desktop allowed through Windows Firewall on the IBM?

Describe exactly what happens when you try to Remote Desktop to the machine.

The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer may be too busy to accept any new connections"

(Sometimes I can ping the server but most of the time it times out)

I can then go to my desktop and connect successfully.

What are you using for your VPN connection a router our is each pc doing the VPN? If it is each pc then make sure all settings in your laptop match your Dell. Also make sure you have port number 3389 opened on your laptop. Also are both pc's stand alones or part of the domain?
