Is there a way in Windows 2000 Pro to do the remote desktop connection or terminal server connection (I think it's also called) to a server or another workstation? Or can you only initiate these connections from Windows 2000 and 2003 server editions? Thanks.

For RD or TS you require two things:

. a Host, which would be either a Windows Server running Terminal Server, or an XP Professional Workstation;

. an the client software. Any Win9x, NT, ME, Win2k, or XP version can act as client. You might want to check that you have the newest client version: See the fourth question here:

Windows 2000 Pro and XP Pro both support remote desktop connection (terminal services client). Look for "mstsc.exe" to see if it's on your computer.

You can also create a client installation disk from a 2000/2003 Server with Terminal Services installed as an application server.

zaznet,

He wanted a Host connection.

If you are suggesting this is possible under Win2k Pro, you are absolutely in error.

Read my post above.

I read his post a bit differently. It looked as if he wanted to make the connection FROM a 2000 and XP workstation TO a Server. I agree that 2000 Pro would NOT allow you to run a terminal server HOST to allow clients to connect to it.

The key in his post was "to a server". He did not say to the Win2000 Pro Workstation. Maybe he meant that though.

Sorry for causing the confusion gang. I wanted to connect FROM my Win2K Pro PC TO a Win 2000 or 2003 server or another XP PC. I don't remember how I found out about this, it might have been from the first reply above, but I found the Remote Desktop Connection app for Win2k Pro on Microsoft's site and it works great!

zaznet,

No big deal. People get frustrated with RD, and it is almost always the confusion between OS versions that support the Host, and OS versions that support the client.

By the way, a belated "Welcome to Tek-Tips" from me. You have posted some great stuff.

Best wishes,

Hey folks, does anyone know of any new updates allowing WINDOWS 2000 PRO to be a host for RD? I am just starting to support a large network of WINDOWS 2000 PRO computers and I love RD for XP Pro. If they still haven't made a program to run RD as a host on WIN2KPRO do you know of any other good remote control tools I could use? Freebee's are a necessity, as of course we have no budget.

Hey thanks in advance for your help.

VNC works great.

I'm Certifiable, not certified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

Yes I know the program and UltraVNC is my fav flavor. But how secure is it? Not secure right?
