How do I get the updated Remote Desktop Client v6.1 when I already have WinXP sp3. I download the update to Remote Destop (terminal services) and it says I already have that software installed.

Is there a way for me to upgrade my Desktop Client from v6.0 to v6.1? Any ideas?

What version of Mstsc.exe do you have in XP?

In a XP SP3 version that was supplied via Virtual PC XP Mode (in Windows 7), I have one that seems to be a Vista version number?

Location = C:\WINDOWS\system32
Version = 6.0.6001.18000
Size = 662 KB (677,888 bytes)

In a stock standard XP SP3 on another machine I have this one, which seems to be a Windows 7 version number.

Location = C:\WINDOWS\system32
Version = 6.1.7600.16385
Size = 0.98MB (1,033,728 bytes)

I have not done anything odd just regular Windows Updates (including manual checks).

Why don't you try a manual Windows Update, and make sure you get both "Recommended" as well as "Security" updates checked by clicking on the "CUSTOM" button. Windows Automatic Updates will never offer you recommended updates (in XP), you have to do it manually.

"First, while Automatic Updates in Windows XP SP2 did a great job of getting critical security fixes onto your PC, there really was no way for you to automatically keep your PC up-to-date with the non-critical updates that are important to keep your PC current."

On my work PC (which I know has the latest) is:

Location = C:\Windows\system32
Version = 6.1.7600.16385
Size = 0.98 MB(1,033,728 bytes)

On my work laptop (which is older):
Location = C:\Windows\system32
Version = 6.0.6001.18000
Size = 662 KB (677,888 bytes)

Are you saying all I need is copy that exe from my work PC to my work Laptop and all will be well?

I will check the "Recommended" updates from Microsoft. Seems I think I tried that once, and the .Net Framework install crashed and none of the other updates were applied.

I'll try again - and report.

Well - it was worth a shot, but no luck. After applying 16 patches (it is Patch Tuesday), not a one of them updated my "mstsc.exe" to version 6.1

What next? Any other suggestions?

The reason I want version 6.1 is because it supports better color depth, font smoothing, and overall a richer experience. I have to use Remote Desktop a lot with my job to monitor/administrate other Win boxes. I can DO it in 16 bit color - I just don't want to.

I'm not sure which patch on my work desktop PC applied the newer mstsc.exe. Seems like finding a needle in a haystack.

I can DO it in 16 bit color", I haven't seen that display resolution for many years of using Remote Desktop. Have you checked the Remote Desktop "Options" to see what settings you have available for the Display? Or are you connecting via Dial-Up where Bandwidth is a problem?

I suppose you could try swapping the latest Mstsc.exe for your current version, but Windows File Protection might have something to say about that, so any swapping (and backing up, copying, or renaming, of old files) might have to be done via the Recovery Console or similar.

Anything here, or is this what you have already tried?

Description of the Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 client update for Remote Desktop Services (RDS) for Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Vista SP2

If memory serves me correctly, the RDC update to Version = 6.1.xxx is under the optional updates not the Recommended/Important updates.

Do a manual MS update, select Custom, and then go to the Optional update section. While you're there, install the latest Root Certificate update too.

Hope this helps.

Linney - thanks for that link - I had looked at it before, but I didn't see the places to download the newer versions of the Remote Desktop Client - I am now running with ver 7.0 on my laptop - so sweet.

Thanks, a ton.
