At home I use Vista Home Premium and at work I have Vista Business. Until recently I was able to remote into my work PC by connecting to my company's VPN and then opening RDC, entering the IP or Computer Name of my Work PC and logging in. No problems.

Just recently however, I cannot login to the Work PC. The VPN is functioning fine (as I can RDC into the servers etc. at work) but it won't allow me to connect to the PC.

As far as I am aware, nothing has changed in the config of my Work PC. I have tried RDC, I have tried VNC programs etc. and nothing is letting me in.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I could look at?

Thanks.

first ask your sysadmin if they changed something
what message do you get (or is it just sitting there, do you get asked for username/password..)

PC Workstations aren't usually static IP's like a server would be. I have to ask have you checked to make sure that the PC ip didn't change? you never mentioned specifically

Could be the IP changed if the PC was somehow moved to a different router port, but you would still be able to find it by name (usually). Maybe they replaced a 24 port switch with a 48 port switch and you're plugged into a different port now.

IT Dept could have implemented a new Group Policy prohibiting Remote Desktop for PCs in the "user" group (and not the "server" group).

One of the MS monthly patches recently made some changes to Remote Desktop in my environment - now when I go to connect to a server it pops up and warns me that connecting could be harmful and asks if I want to connect anyway - that is new and I never saw that before this month's batch of updates (unless our IS department twiddled with that).

I have a static IP at work as this was setup explicitly for me. Have spoken to IT admin etc. and they have made no changes to security, firewalls etc.

I can RDC to our servers, I can RDC to other PCs but no joy at all with my own PC.

Will make a note of the exact message I get later and will post here.

Thanks.

Did you check network connectivy with a ping, traceroute, telnet or any other application?

Cheers,
Dian

MS updates will sometimes change firewall settings without your knowledge or approval. Temporarily disable your firewall and try again.
