Hi,

I was wondering what methods there are of controlling an RS/6000 remotely. (Like Sun's Remote Console)
We can do it with the HMC interface into the Power 5's Hypervisor, but is there anything of any box in general?

Thanks in advance...

For text console access, ssh is the way to go.

For graphical, install VNC and use ssh tunnelling to secure the connection.

Third option (the one I actually use): ssh from a Linux (or any X-windows) box with X-Forwarding enabled. This will let you run the occassional X program on the remote server if needed.

I use a VMware virtual Linux machine on my Win2000 desktop machine for this. VMware is cheaper than Hummingbird eXceed, and a full Linux distro is much more useful than a standalone Xserver.

Thanks Guys,

I use Cygwin on my Windows PC for the X server and no problems with Slackware on my laptop.
I was more interested in finding out if there is mechanism of viewing the machine's console (via serial for instance) should the network adatper fail etc.
We're going to deploying AIX into 27 countries around Africa and I'm just looking at tools to perform remote admin should the box go off the network and be able to few the console when the OS is down (to view POST messages etc.)

Thanks again...

You can always go with a console server connected to the serial port defined as the console. However, if you are connected to an HMC, you will not be able to use the serial ports to connect to the console on the server.

IBM does not have a "lights-out" management interface like the newer Sun systems.

That's what I as afraid of :)
Thanks...
