Hello,

I have read numerous threads about problematic remote connection, and see two ways to solve the situation. One, install external modem on system extension, or use external modem on computer you are connecting from.

Question: Anybody had any luck with PCMCIA USRobotics modems? I would be much simplier to carry a PCMCIA modem, than a full size external.

Thanks a billion to all the people in this thread. You may not know it, but you have saved me time and headaches many times in the past. Some of us read and lurk, more than ask questions.

Thanks,

Jeff

YES, I purchased on off E-BAy, a 56K PC Card Modem for $.50 and $5.00 postage. I downloaded the driver from the internet and BINGO! no more remote connection problems.

I also found that USRobotics 33.6 with an XJack, XJ4336 works, so far. Just a few hours testing.

I also purchased the modem on ebay, dirt cheap. I saw someone selling eight of the modems for about $15, including shipping. I was hoping I wouldn't have to carry an external modem, the PCMCIA is sooo much easier to tuck in the bag.

The Xjack is better than a dongle, IMNERHO. It's still subject to damage, but at least I can't loose the dongle. My personal favorite PCMCIA modem is a Xircom. Can't loose a dongle (there isn't one,) and the jack is built in and solid. Back when laptops didn't always have a modem, I installed Xircom's for all the travelers. Only downside is it's a type 3, and my laptop only has a single slot. Don't have a clue what to do with the latest, supposed greates card slots. I wonder if someone will make a USB PCMCIA?

I will post an update after I complete more testing. YMMV.

Jeff

Are you saying a PC Card modem can be put in the processor slot on an ACS?

The modems listed would be for the computer side. The R6 does not have a port for an external modem. The R7, on the other hand, does.

To throw a little more fat on the fire, I've been using an external modem for years on the office desktop, I usually program the larger systems here and upload to the ACS, I've found times where I can't connect right here locally, at which point I changed remote access card to no avail, changed ACS and it connects thru, so what I've been doing is upload to ACS in office backup to card and do a restore when on prem.
remotely I probably have a 80% connect rate so unless it's wiped out I don't try to do any changes remotely.
