Remote connect and Netgear wireless router configuration

Hi,

I have browsed through some previous discussion on the subject I brought up. One thing I would like to get more information:

I am using a Netgear router for my desktop. Now I try to remote connect to this desktop so I have to configure this router. Some posts suggested port forwarding on the router. My question is:

What is the detail procedure to configure the router with this regard? I know nothing about router configuration, so please be patient and detail.

There will be some sort of Port Forwarding configuration on your router, on my Linksys it comes under Application Configuration but each make/model is different to configure I guess. What model is your Netgear router?

A little update: I tried the port forwarding in Netgear's configuration page and obtain the host desktop's ip address but still can't connect to this via internet. I am suspecting the way I configured Netgear router is wrong. Here is the setting I use for port forwarding:

name: remote; port: 3389 ; ip address: 192.168.0.5 (this is the host desktop ip address).

Anyone has idea?

the netgear mr814 has at least three versions
these notes are from .v3 (the white case)
with wireless antennae

logon to the router
in the advanced section on the left hand list

-first- open the Lan IP Setup page

default setting is checked Use Router as DHCP Server
default starting ip address is 192.168.0.2

the pc address in your post was ...0.5
your pc may have a floating dhcp address and may
change as time passes, this will cause static port forwarding to fail to work as needed

suggestion: reset the router to start assigning dhcp addresses
at .0.50 or 0.100


then configure your pc using the network cpl to have a fixed addres
ip 192.168.0.20 or any address not already in use on this lan
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1

and

dns 192.168.0.1

apply, test access to lan and internet

-second- logon to the router again, open the port forwarding page

click Add Custom Service radio button

make up a name rdp_example
server ip enter 192.168.0.20
start/end ports enter 3389 for both
apply the change, when the page returns

the line will read more or less...
service name start port end port server id address
1 rdp_example 3389 3389 192.168.0.20

router part is finished

restart router
verify that the pc can still access the router
and browse the internet

on the pc
from a username that is a member of administrators group

right click on "My Computer"
select properties
open Remote tab
in the lower pane place a checkmark in

Allow users to connect remotely to this computer


administrators default to being allowed
all others usernames have to be added.

if the username that will be used is just a member of Users
then click on Select Remote Users
and add the username that will be used to logon from a remote site
apply and ok till closed

be sure that the username that will be used to logon using rdp
has a password that is at least one character in length. usernames with NO or NULL password
cannot logon to xp remotely.

return to network cpl/security cpl
and turn off windows firewall while testing

restart router, and pc, recheck the changes

this next step bypasses the router config and only locally tests the pc settings

from someother pc that is on the same LAN segment 192.168.0.xxx

launch remote desktop
in the address line enter 192.168.0.20
and then press connect

should get the logon dialog box on your host pc
if so the pc will accept a remote session
logon with the username chosen above

done. host pc changes were successful


determine the public address of the router
launch iexplore , url address:

http://www.whatismyip.com

record the public ip displayed w.x.y.z
can also be found by browsing to the router, examine basic setting / status

travel to the remote pc.
launch iexplore, confirm that internet access is working

launch the rdp application
in the address slot enter the public ip address displayed by whatismyip.com
w.x.y.z press connect

should cause logon dialogue box to appear


cautions

if the host xp has recently been booted, remote access connections
will be blocked for about a minute or so.

in the windows firewall Excpetions tab,
verify that remote desktop has a check, before turning the
windows firewall on.
test locally to confirm before driving to remote pc

if the host pc has welcome screen logon style, when accessing via rdp, the login screen will appear, not the welcome screen. welcome screen will only be seen when sitting at the host pc.
