Hi,
I am using backup exec 8.5 for Win2k. I installed remote agent on 6 Win2k servers. When I try to backup these servers I get an error "Remote agent not present Performing Standard Backup".
I tried the both the solutions posted on the Veritas suppoet site without any luck. I would appreciate if somebody could help me out in resolving the issue

thanks in advance

DUDE! I have the same problem! Any answers? If not I'll call Veritas. I bought tech support.

Try this:

On the server where the Agent Accelerator (Backup Exec for Windows NT/2000 v8.0)/Remote Agent (Backup Exec for Windows NT/2000 v8.5) is installed locate the registry key by performing the following:
1. Go to Start > Run.
3. Type Regedt32 and locate the key

"\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock\Parameters\Tr
ansports"

If there is a reference to the AppleTalk protocol and it is not installed on the system, then remove this entry and reboot the server. The Agent Accelerator/Remote Agent service should start and the remote server can be backed up.

For each server you want to backup, you need a Remote Agent (Backup Exec for Windows NT/2000 v8.5) license. So you must buy these licenses by Veritas. Then it will work.

We had this software running for almost a year (version 8.5, win2k). Suddenly 17 days ago the backup server cannot see any Remote agents anymore. We keep a log of all changes to the servers and all I did was add some published applications on some Metaframe servers which are backed up. That cannot surely cause this? I've tried all the tips on the Veritas site - even upgraded to 8.5 build 3572 Rc9 which had another annoying bug...now solved.

I've tried the lmhosts fix, the telnet test on port 6103 - it all works, but the software still doesn't "see" the agents. Tried a number of times to completely re-install (also with cleanups of all Backup Exec rubbish left in the registry after the de-install). We've got 5 agents, all paid for and now they don't work. Veritas takes days to answer any e-mail questions and keep telling me to do something I've already tried (after which you need to wait a few days for a new reply).

I'm desparate to get this working again. Anyone with any ideas?

I've got an idea that this remote backup error thing (error in log: Remote agent not present - performing standard backup) is just a bug or something. I removed backup exec completely again today and tried to do a remote backup without the agent on some servers. I found I was unable to even select system state on remote servers where the agent was not installed. The backup server is therefore seeing something after the installation of the remote agent even thoigh the log shows an error.

Solved it:

I installed another protocol (in this case both apple talk and ipx) then removed them. Now it works. This can be a problem if you've just done a migration from say Novell or Mac. The agent can stop working if the other protocols are removed. You can see if this is the case on your server by looking in the options - network tab. Is your option for tcp/ip and ipx greyed-out in the part where it says "enable remote agents via:". That could be a sign that you have the same as I had.
