Remote Administration Modem for Merlin Legend.

First of all, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Second, the question

I've read in the merlin legend 7 guides about setting up a modem for remote administration, but can't quite get the grasp of it.

The manual has this really convoluted diagram of all the possible ways you could set a modem up. All of the possible ways involves hooking up various extra little boxes and what not in between the modem and the system.

Basically, what I need to do is have a modem which will allow me to dial into a number (it could be an extension, or a POTS line, either way its not important) and use WinSPM to do changes/administration to the system.

I know in the past people mentioned you needed a special adapter cable to connect your WinSPM PC directly to the admin port, but I was able to just make a cable with RJ-45s on one end, and DB9 on the other, and that worked fine, without any extra equipment.

I've tried setting a modem to autoanswer, and connecting it to the admin port using the same cable, but I get nothing, no DTR light on the modem or anything.

Can anyone suggest what equipment I need? Or is it just some setting on the modem?

Put the modem on the switch as an analog extension, and dial *10. WinSPM connects that way. A modem is not used to connect to the admin port.

thats cool, but what does the modem connect to?
I imagine the phone cord goes to an analog extension, but what does the serial port get plugged into?

When you are connecting via a modem connection you need to be manually transfered to *10. The processor has a built in modem for this reason. You need to have an analog phone sharing your modem PC's modem line. You call someone at that location from your analog phone, then when someone onsite answers you ask them to transfer you to extension *10 and hang-up. You will then hear modem tone and follow the connection prompts in WIN SPM. If you are dialing into the same location you are at then simply call your desk phone and transfer yourself.
You should also instruct everyone never transfer anyone to *10 unless you know who they are (obvious security reasons).
If you need to change your remote connection password this can only be done from a direct connection to the admin port.
craftr4 is the factory default password and is case sensitive.
